Children celebrate in Didim

26th April, 2008

YOUNGSTERS from across Didim and the world came together on Wednesday Apr 23 to mark National Sovereignty and Children’s Day.

The day, bestowed on children by Atatürk, Turkey’s founding father, was celebrated with much enthusiasm in Didim, with British children attending Valiler Elementary School also taking part in the ceremonies.

Invited by the Atatürk Elementary School, 48 Georgian and 23 Kirghiz children came to Didim for the celebrations this year. The young guests together with their teachers visited Mayor Mümin Kamacı and Head Official Ali Katırcı.

The Kirghiz students gave Mayor Kamacı and Head Official Katırcı Kirghiz kalpaks, a symbol of their country. The guest students also attended the celebrations at the city stadium.

The audience enthusiastically applauded the dance and folk dance shows of the young students. The dance show of the Atatürk Elementary School with the guest students from Kyrgyzstan and Georgia received standing ovation from the public.

During the celebrations at the city stadium, the students who ranked in the top three in the painting, poetry and essay competition on 23rd April were awarded. The celebrations ended with the parade march.

23 April 1920 is the day when the Grand National Assembly of Turkey first opened. The founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk bestowed this important day to children and wanted it to be celebrated. The 23rd April is the only Children’s Holiday in the world.
