Ships bring tourism boost

1st June, 2008

AN EXTRA 38 cruise ships will visit Didim over the summer and bring thousands more visitors to the area, it has been disclosed.

Şukrü Tugay, assistant chief executive officer of the Yeşıl Marmaris company, which is acting as agents for Windstar Cruise Liners, said that between 10,000 and 15,000 tourists would pass through the international port gates this season.

This would provide a massive boost to Didim which normally sees about 60,000 tourists each year.

Mr Tugay said: “The extra numbers of tourists will surely bring massive advantages to the area. It gives the area greater exposure to new tourists who may not have normally come to the resort.”

His comments as two Windstar cruise ships, Wind Spirit and Wind Star, docked in the bay on Wednesday. They bought with them a total of 266 tourists who either stayed in the resort, or went on pre-booked trips. Another cruise ship is due in next Wednesday.

He said Yeşıl Marmaris officials were now in touch with other cruise operators in a bid to bring more ships and tourists to Didim later in the year.

There has still been no confirmation as to when ferries will be leaving Altinkum for the Greek islands, or indeed when ferries will be arriving from the likes of Kos to the resort.
